The game is fun but….
Long term I already see a major issue for one particular play style. Infantry will have the worst time of all play styles available in WD.
Let’s breakdown some things I’ve noticed on my one and a half day where I got to play.
I played on release when everyone was level 0 and once again on day 2 when multiple players were level 35+ (hoping to play one more time tonight as well).
When everyone was starting out and we were all boots on the ground the map felt refreshing, fun, and captivating. Sure there were some moments where a sniper was doing too much posted up in a bridge not playing objective just being a pest… that’s ok tbh that’s what a sniper should do. However, builders would build for a bit and then be forced to join the fight because infantry would be moving all over the map following the HZ. Ultimately the KOTH gameplay loop felt fresh because there was a good sense of movement and equal diversity across play styles.
Fast forward to day 2 where players have leveled up grabbed more vehicles and snipers builders are more efficient… well here is where the game becomes a little monotonous. Snipers have better gear to hide so as infantry you spend more time tip toeing around the map than you do storming hot spots. Snipers and builders learn how lucrative it is to tower camp further decreasing infantry engagement around the map, and finally the many tanks and helicopters limiting your movement also discourage the infantry play style.
Now don’t get me wrong I know that’s ultimately the infantry life. However here is where the issue comes in, on a game built around earning cash from your play style, to then losing that cash to build your loadout, it becomes hard to encourage anyone not to go get a sniper or tank and play for keeps. Why would I spend 10k on a fire kit, to die to someone I literally stand no chance against… it ultimately leaves a sour taste in your mouth.
Now as an avid gamer and old head I have plenty of experience and know that some of the infantry life is patience, positioning, and playing to your loadouts advantage. I also understand from a less skilled and less experienced players point of view, as infantry where things currently stand “this game sucks” because most infantry are COD / BF fans and they want to run and gun.
Obviously infantry will lose out in this style of gameplay no matter what but I think because the map is so big, player count is so small per team (out of 33 players on a good day maybe 10-12 play infantry per team), and the money gear fear effect hits so hard for gamers who don’t have as much time as others to get better, it would be nice if the Devs could think about ways to encourage better CQB gameplay.
TL;DR - If you’re used to large scale battles and know that infantry gameplay can be slow but rewarding then WD can be really fun and captivating. If you’re only familiar with running and gunning I could see this game being very boring, annoying, and frustrating because let’s be honest the modern FPS player is not in it for the immersion, they’re in it for the GOML vibes. I think since the game is not focusing on immense realism then the devs can cater to infantry and building battles a little better.
All in all, great game, 9/10 experience will definitely buy day one if price is reasonable.
