Mortars are awesome, but….
I’m an avid user of mortars. I come from an actual artillery background so I’m just naturally drawn to indirect fire in games when they have it. This game makes mortars pretty damn fair in terms of lethality, but it’s far too easy to use currently. But I think I’ve come up with a few solutions that increase the skill curve and encourages team work to use effectively.
• The absolute number one thing and probably the easiest for developers to implement is removing Follow cam. IT IS BUSTED. You can gather so much information about the enemy location, personnel, movements and structures just from firing one round. It doesn’t take a genius to guesstimate adjustments and eventually destroy a fob or high value targets (HVTs). Artillery is generally only as effective as the information given by the Forward Observer or whoever is calling for IDF (indirect fire). By removing follow cam it immediately creates a necessity for a forward observer role in the form of recon in order to mark HVTs, enemies, friendlies on the map and to call in adjustments or repeats. Without that role most players will just be taking inaccurate swings in the general direction of the FOBs.
• 1 round loaded at a time. Currently you can load up to 3 rounds on standby and rapid fire them for a pretty devastating effect on target areas. It becomes absolute carnage when you have like 3+ mortar men dunking 9+ rounds into the fob at the same time. One round and reloading should be the max fire rate.
• 2 man mortar system. This is piggy backing off of point number 2. To increase the fire rate a teammate can become a loader to increase the fire rate. Which would decrease the amount of total firing mortar men effectively in half but increasing the fire rate. The loader would get kill assists and support xp and all that just like any other vehicle currently. I imagine this would take longer for developers to implement but I believe it worth it to create diversity in individual roles and squads.
To wrap things up, I’m just going to say that I am not in any form or shape a developer or have any knowledge on game mechanics or coding so I don’t know how difficult these changes could be. I’m just assuming the follow cam and fire rate solutions would be easier than the 2 man mortar system. But overall I think these changes would increase the skill curve and coordination required to operate mortars effectively while being more rewarding for good teamwork and opening up new roles for people play.
Love the game so far, can’t wait to see what’s next for the game.
