How is setting up a HOTAS like?

Asking because I know it wasn't great in Arma Reforger. I got a stick, a throttle and some pedals. Really want to focus my gameplay on being a transport heli if I can.

Is it straightforward? Is it a bit of a pain I'm the ass the first time? How well is it at detecting switches with multiple stages? Things like that.
