I'm a 20k hour Arma / KOTH vet. Here's what I think of the flying/Game.
First off, I've spent around 20k hours on Arma over the last 13~ years or so. About 80% of that time has been flying, and roughly 50% that time, flying in the KOTH servers. Some of you vets might remember me, I played under "Xan". (Although it's been many years since I played last.) Mostly playing the RHS Vic servers. Not to sound too elitist, but I think I'm qualified to give some feedback here.
I've spent the last 12 hours flying transports, with some CAS mixed in here and there, and here are my thoughts.
The game is marvelous. KOTH has been one of those "Man, if everyone knew about this, NOBODY would play battlefield" games. WD brings that feeling to the masses, and I can see that in the way these folks play. It's kind of funny to see people that have never played KOTH before, but, the beauty of KOTH is that it's so simple at it's core, that in a single match you can watch people go from "Man idk, this economy thing is weird, this combat is odd" and then by the end of the match they get it, it clicks, and they're singing the praises.
So, bravo, to the creators, for making what I personally consider the best game to be made in the last 13 years.
Now, on to some bulleted thoughts.
(I'm flying with HOTAS, with all assists off)
• Flying is tremendous. Truly, nailed it. (Mostly) I spent 12 hours gaming, to my wife's dismay, and I have had the most fun I've had in years. It's tremendously rewarding, weight feels good to me, Momentum feels nice, characteristics overall feel very similar to A3's AFM. Physics are for the most part good as well. • Econ for pilots is great. Specifically transport, which is how I feel it should be. • CAS Birds are not overpowered, and counters do exist. • Ammo system is cool, and I see the vision. Being able to possible purchase special loadouts for special tasking is phenomenal. I love it. • Dropping supplies off, tremendous as-well. Love that aspect. Problems - (Some of these might be my own fault and if so please help me)
• I don't like how it disables your keyboard when you activate HOTAS mode. Please fix this. I have for many years used keyboard controls for collective, and currently, that's prohibited. I can't seem to use keyboard collective AND my HOTAS at the same time, without aftermarket software that is sketchy to use on a game with EAC. I decided to not use it, and have been awkwardly flying with a Throttle I had lying around. I don't like this, it's restrictive in nature to what combinations some folks and myself would like to use. • There's no native binding to a Hat or Joy for Freelook. I couldn't find this setting, if it exists please excuse me and I'll edit this out. But I would really enjoy the option to bind a joy or hat switch to look left/right/up/down etc. • The little-bird skids catch far to easy on the ground. When I'm landing sideways in mud, I get it, they should dig in, get stuck, and flip. But If I'm on solid concrete, I really should get some more lee-way. It just feels, ever so slightly off. It just feels like the skids are digging in about 15% ~ too much,. • For the 30 seconds i did have the assists on, they felt absolutely brutal. It's like it's constantly fighting you for control over the aircraft. Maybe a slider to adjust the intensity of their effects would be nice for folks learning how to fly. • My biggest complaint : Neutral collective should not lift me up. Neutral collective should just be enough to match the weight of the aircraft, not artificially lift me 20ft in the air and THEN begin to hover. Feels awkward and forced. And such, those are my most relevant opinions. Ones I believe I understand foundationally enough to share my thoughts on. Curious to see what my fellow A3KOTH pilots think.
Anyways, if any WD devs see this, at the end of the day, these are nit-picks, and this might just be the greatest gaming experience ever created.
