This might be a confusing question, but is the beta the same application as the playtest?

I saw that in order to get access to the beta, you have to pre order for a code. But at the same time, the playtest I was just apart of got an update.

Is the playtest application the same as the beta? Do players who pre order basically get access to what we already have, or is the beta going to be a completely different download?
