Fundamental Misunderstanding of What WarDogs Is
I’ll try and keep this short, because I know a lot of you ain’t got time to be reading all that. But so many people on the subreddit seem to have a fundamental misunderstanding of what WarDogs is and what it is supposed to be.
Bulkhead stated they worked with the creator of the 2014 Arma 3 mod called King of the Hill, Sa-Matra extensively in the development of WarDogs and the legend RoidRage (iykyk). That being said, is WarDogs just Arma 3 KOTH in Unreal Engine 5? No. The game almost certainly has its own distinct identity to anyone who’s played the closed alpha or closed beta. Does it take massive amounts of inspiration from Arma 3 KOTH? Yes it does. But it is not Arma 3 KOTH and nor is it trying to be. But it’s impossible to go out on a limb and say many core gameplay loop and design choices harken back to the 2014 classic mod.
The mod is still in active development today, Sa-Matra, RoidRage, and others still march on with update after update to the mod and it’s evolved over the years. That being said the point of this post and the history lesson many of you are probably already familiar with is that Arma 3 KOTH and more important WarDogs knows what it’s supposed to be and sticks to it.
We can quote the devs directly “this isn’t a game for everyone.” That’s quite important when you take into context that Bulkhead knows exactly what they want to make. The vision is solid, that’s not to say they won’t take suggestions or improvements but they’re not going to suffer from an identity crisis anytime soon. They have the basics figured out, the bones are there.
That being said for the mass amount of people I see writing feedback on Reddit, or discord, or anywhere else for that matter, take a hard look at what you’re asking for and ask yourself one question. Does this fit in with the core vision? No? Maybe retool your idea to fit in it. Not every idea has to get scrapped if it’s not a home run on the first try. But don’t try and put a square peg through a round hole and wonder why people reject what you want vehemently.
Some examples are adding commanders and squad leaders who control the flow of the battlefield. That’s not part of the core vision, there’s other games for that. Arma 3 KOTH used to have the entire team on a single channel, it was chaotic but fun. Removing one of the teams (blue always draws the short straw when I see these) and I get it, Blue has always sucked since 2014 but removing one of the teams violates the core vision. Things of this nature, take a hard look at the core vision and really scrutinize your feedback. We all want WarDogs to be the best it can be, they’re doing a good job so far at setting us on that path.
Who am I and why should you listen to me? Well you shouldn’t, I’m just some random guy on Reddit who played Arma 3 KOTH back in 2014. I hold no special qualification to talk to you all about this and I am no more correct than anyone else screaming into the void. I’m just some guy who loved playing KOTH the second I got home in high school with my buddies and I’m happy to see something like that appearing again. I share your passion and I’ll see you in game when we all have to pick Lonestar because everyone else is full.
