Guide for countering tanks as Infantry
Spent this evening testing various weapons vs tanks and wanted to share. Hopefully this will help explain some of the inconsistencies people run into when fighting tanks. If your AT hits a module (front armor, track, engine) then some of the damage is absorbed by the module and reduces damage to the overall HP. As seen in the image, part of the side of the turret and chassis is still considered covered by the frontal armor thus hits landing there do reduced damage. This is what causes the number of shots to kill to vary so wildly.
Legend:
• Front = Red Zone • Side = Blue Zone 1 • Rear = Purple Zone • Tracks = Green Zone • Engine = Orange Zone Note 1: Hits to the back of the turret currently do the same amount of damage as hits to the side of the chassis/turret - it is almost never worth shooting the turret unless it is the only target available.
Some useful hit-to-kill info 2 for infantry:
• HEAT, MAAWS, RPG, C4, and IED all 1 shot Tracks and Engine for immobilization. 3 frags will also break the tracks in a pinch. • IED:1 on Rear, 2 on Side/2 underneath. • MAAWS: 2 on Rear, 3 on Side • RPG: 3 on Rear, 5 on Side for chance to set on fire/6 to kill • C4: 3 on Rear, 5 on Side. • AP mines: 2 underneath (feels bad) Note 2: if you hit the Engine/back of Turret/Tracks when shooting the Rear, or hit the Front/Tracks when shooting the Side, then it will require an extra hit to kill.
Takeaways:
• Don't even bother with the Front unless forced as part of a tank duel, it's a waste of time and resources. • Always try to hit the rear. Even if you miss the high damage zone, you can hit the Engine or Tracks and immobilize it, making it vulnerable to IEDs/C4/generally easier to hit. • Tracks are a good way to immobilize (aim for one of the road wheels, the rear sprocket, or the track cover from the Rear), can be done from 3 sides, and can be done with frags if desperate (just make sure to target the same tread as they have separate health pools), then you can camp the crew until someone with AT shows up. Further testing is needed to figure out how to break the fuel tank. Only had it happen once to me in the Alpha when fighting a Gepard. When testing tonight, the tank always died before I was able to break the fuel tank.
Hope this helps demystify how to fight tanks a bit.
